What is this plastic/particle board in my ceiling?
What is this plastic/particle board in my ceiling?
I am working on installing recessed lighting in my kitchen ceiling. I cut a hole in the ceiling and found that instead of joists, I have 1.5 x 1.5 furring strips that have a white plastic looking surface above them. There are a couple nicks in the surface from my drywall saw and it looks like there is some kind of particleboard behind the plastic surface. I can't find any info about what this particle board could be and whether or not it's safe to cut into this board to make room for my recessed lights.
