Surprise co-living with a large family
Surprise co-living with a large family
My parents and I are currently on a 4-day holiday in Mahavelona, Madagascar. We booked what we thought was a private vacation home, but upon arrival, we discovered it is actually a co-living with shared kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets. (Not sure if co-living is the right word here)
The house has four bedroom. Two of them are taken by a big family of 20 people (only 4 adults).
The owner never informed us about this prior to our arrival.
Because we were exhausted from the road, we decided to just let it go and stay.
But soon it became apparent that the big family completely ignores our presence:
They leave their stuff all over the floor (shoes, toys, bag, water puddle!, etc) and don't clean after themselves when using the toilet/bathroom.
The faucet only works when the owner manually runs an outdoor water pump. Whenever he turns it on, they rush to the bathrooms first. By the time they finish, there's no more water for us
They take over the kitchen to eat
They make loud noises very late at night
Since we all absent during the day, these issues happen in early in the morning or at night.
I get that they have a lot of children -likely more than the 4 adults can manage -and the kids are causing most of the chaos.
Cleaning the shared space is the responsability of the owner. He usually send a housekeeper but he doesn't do it regularly.
My parents want to stay so we can focus more on the trip itself; they think we only need the house for sleeping anyway. Our current plan is to plan around their schedule by using the bathroom earlier or later than them.
This is my very first time sharing a living space with strangers. How would you deal with this? Did we make the right call by staying and adapting ?
