Should a bathroom in an old Victorian/Edwardian house use breathable materials or standard waterproof tiling?
I'm renovating the bathroom in a Victorian terrace in the UK with solid brick walls and (where not yet touched) original lime plaster. I understand the "let the walls breathe" principle applies to solid masonry generally, but I'm not sure how far that extends into a bathroom specifically, where everything gets wet.
Should the shower/bath area be fully tanked and tiled like a modern build regardless of the wall's age, or is there a case for breathable materials even in the wet zone? And does the answer change for the rest of the bathroom outside the immediate splash area?
