Cutting Joist in Attic

Cutting Joist in Attic An HVAC repairman once cut about 1-2 feet out of one of the joists in my attic to create a new vent into my restroom. Is it ever ok to do this? I have had my doubts after the job was done. He reassured me that it would not be a problem. I'm now trying to figure out if the individual was being truthful or not.
